French vs English

Two herringbone variants. Different feel. Same European Oak quality.

The variant your designer chooses changes the visual rhythm of the floor. Both supplied as engineered European Oak — slab-on-grade compatible for Houston construction.

Continuous · Refined

French Herringbone

Mitered 45° plank ends create a continuous geometric flow — no perpendicular interruptions. Reads cleaner, more European, more architectural. Designer-favorite for foyers and modern primary suites.

  • 45° mitered ends both plank ends
  • Continuous V-flow across the field
  • Higher material waste (~15% over straight plank)
  • Slightly higher install precision needed
Traditional · Textured

English Herringbone

Square-ended planks installed at 90° to each other — the historic herringbone weave with visible block transitions. More traditional read, especially in character grade. Strong for dining rooms and library installs.

  • Square 90° plank ends
  • Visible weave transitions every row
  • Lower material waste (~10% over straight plank)
  • Forgiving install relative to French
Why Herringbone

Six reasons Houston designers spec herringbone.

01

Historic pattern, modern read

Herringbone has been speccable since the 16th century. In matte finish on character-grade European Oak it reads as fresh as any contemporary pattern.

02

Designer foyer signature

The single most-spec'd pattern for high-end Houston residential foyers in the last 3 years. Published in PaperCity, Houston Modern Luxury, and AD South.

03

Slab-on-grade compatible

Engineered herringbone handles Houston slab-on-grade construction with proper moisture barrier prep — no cupping or gapping with our multi-ply core.

04

Wide-plank variant available

Standard herringbone is 4-6" wide planks. We can mill 7-8" wide herringbone on custom orders for primary suites and great-room scale.

05

Pairs with chevron + plank

Herringbone in foyer transitions cleanly to wide-plank in adjacent rooms with a feature strip. We supply the transition planks pre-finished to match.

06

NWFA-trained crews

Herringbone install requires subfloor flatness and exacting alignment. Our in-house Houston install crews are NWFA-trained on pattern install specifically.

FAQ

Herringbone in Houston — designer questions.

French herringbone or English — which should I spec?
French herringbone (mitered 45° ends) reads cleaner and more European — better for modern interiors and continuous-flow installs. English herringbone (square 90° ends) reads more traditional with visible weave transitions — better for character-driven rooms like libraries, dining rooms, and farmhouse-modern primary suites. Most Houston designers spec French for high-modern foyers and English for traditional-leaning residential.
How does herringbone compare to chevron?
Chevron is point-to-point V-pattern with mitered ends meeting at a continuous apex. Herringbone is the staggered weave. Both are European Oak's strongest patterns — chevron reads cleaner and more architectural, herringbone reads more traditional. We supply both — see our chevron page for direct comparison.
How much extra material do I order for herringbone?
French herringbone: plan 15% over straight-plank install. English herringbone: 10% over. We include this calculation in our trade quotes automatically.
Can herringbone install over a Houston slab?
Yes — our engineered herringbone is rated for slab installation with moisture testing and vapor-barrier prep. We coordinate moisture testing with your install partner pre-install.
Lead time on custom herringbone?
In-stock herringbone SKUs ship in 5 business days. Custom widths or finishes run 10-14 weeks from our European mill. Multi-family herringbone orders are coordinated by Aly with lead-time transparency built into the spec.
