Riva Max Collection · Deepest Cool

Riva Max Krypton — 10″ Wide-Plank European White Oak

The deepest cool color in the Riva Max range — a near-charcoal black with quiet smoke undertones. Krypton is the floor for designers committed to dramatic, modern interiors.

Krypton is the floor we put under the modernist kitchens — the ones with floor-to-ceiling Calacatta, the matte-black hardware, the sculptural lighting. It's the deepest cool color in the Riva Max range and it's not for the unsure. When a designer specs Krypton, they've already decided the floor is part of the architecture.

The Krypton palette

Krypton sits at the deepest cool corner of the Riva Max range — one step deeper than Smoke, the cool opposite of Cigar at the deep warm end. The color reads as a soft near-black with smoke and graphite undertones, never glossy or industrial. Under daylight Krypton reads as a controlled charcoal; under warm LED it gains just enough brown to keep the room from feeling cave-like.

Heavy character grade is what saves Krypton from reading flat-black — knots and mineral streaks become visible silver-and-bone variations against the dark base, giving each plank a sculptural quality. Without the character grade, a floor this dark would feel like vinyl. With it, Krypton reads handmade.

Where Krypton shines

Where Krypton performs in Houston:

Pairing notes for designers

Cabinetry pairings

Krypton pairs with matte-black, deep navy, soft-black, and gunmetal cabinetry; with Calacatta or Carrara marble; with brass at any finish from polished to antique; and with rift-cut white oak when the brief is dark-and-light contrast. It struggles only with warm honey-tone cabinetry — the temperature conflict is irreconcilable. If the client wants warm cabinets at this depth, move them to Cigar.

Wall and trim

Krypton supports dramatic walls — deep navy (BM "Hale Navy"), forest (BM "Black Forest Green"), charcoal, and any deep cool color. For high-contrast, pure-white walls work; warm whites read disconnected. Trim and baseboards in Krypton or matching dark paint disappear into the floor; pure-white trim creates strong contrast that some designers want and others avoid.

Plank-width considerations

At 10 inches wide, Krypton is in the wide-plank category — which carries specific design implications. See our wide-plank vs. narrow-plank guide for the full breakdown. Short version: wide-plank reads more open in large rooms but can overwhelm smaller spaces. For rooms under 12 feet wide, consider whether 10″ is right or if you'd be better served by a narrower Riva collection.

Install method + acclimation

Krypton is engineered construction, accepting all three install methods — glue-down, float, or nail-down — depending on your subfloor. For Houston slab-on-grade homes (~70% of new builds), glue-down with a quality moisture-mitigation primer is the standard. For raised-foundation homes with plywood subfloor, nail-down or glue-down both work; nail-down is faster.

Critically: Krypton, like every wide-plank European Oak in Houston, must be properly acclimated before install. Plan on 5 to 10 days of in-home acclimation with HVAC running at occupied conditions before the first plank goes down. We document moisture readings at delivery, day 3, and day 7. Skipping this step is the most common cause of failed installs in Houston — see our full Houston humidity acclimation guide for the trade-spec process.

How Krypton compares to its siblings

The Riva Max collection includes 10 colors across the tonal range. Here's where Krypton sits relative to its closest neighbors:

Smoke

One step lighter — pick Smoke if Krypton feels too dark for the room scale.

Mercury

Three steps lighter, same cool family — for tonal continuity if a project spans both.

Krypton (you are here)

The near-charcoal black.

Cigar

Same depth, opposite temperature — the warm-side equivalent.

For lighter cool drama, see Smoke or Mercury. For the deepest warm option, see Cigar.

Trade availability

Krypton is a specialty-velocity color, primarily ordered for modern-Memorial, downtown, and commercial projects. Houston inventory is held against forecast; typical lead time 5–10 business days for trade orders under 2,000 sqft. Larger orders ship from Riva Spain in 10–12 weeks.

Krypton is included in the trade sample kit. Strongly recommend pulling a 5″ × 10″ board ahead of spec finalization — Krypton reads dramatically different across lighting conditions, and seeing it under the actual project lighting is the only way to commit confidently.
